For five calendar days including flights, plan three full sightseeing days: a palace and Insa-dong, the National Museum of Korea and Myeongdong, then Yeonnam-dong and Hongdae. Keep arrival light and work backward from the airport deadline on departure day.
This example assumes four nights at one Seoul hotel, usable sightseeing time on Days 2–4, and an interest in history, food and neighborhoods. Myeongdong is the sample base; compare other locations in choosing a Seoul base. All sightseeing times below are suggested planning allowances, not measured journey times, guaranteed opening windows or a tour we have tested in person.
The five-day plan at a glance
Move the middle three days after checking your actual dates. The palace day has the strongest weekday constraint; the museum day is the first candidate for wet weather.
| Day | Main plan | Meal, break and optional time | What to settle first |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1: arrival | Airport → hotel; confirm check-in or luggage storage | Dinner near the hotel once settled | Terminal, transfer, late check-in instructions |
| 2: Jongno | 09:30–12:00 Gyeongbokgung | 12:00–14:00 lunch, movement and rest; 14:00–16:00 Insa-dong | Palace open on your date |
| 3: Yongsan → Myeongdong | 10:00–12:30 National Museum of Korea | Lunch and travel break; 15:00–17:00 Myeongdong shopping, then dinner | Open galleries; any separate session booking |
| 4: Mapo | 11:00–12:00 Yeonnam section of Gyeongui Line Forest Park | Lunch; 14:00–17:00 Hongdae shops and a cafe; optional booked evening event | Two specific businesses you want, plus return route |
| 5: departure | Pack, check out, collect bags and reach the airport | Only a nearby meal or short walk if the calculation leaves room | Airline’s terminal-arrival guidance and hotel-leaving time |
The gaps are intentional: lunch, station entrances, queues and recovery time belong in the itinerary. If a morning overruns, remove the afternoon addition rather than treating the next starting time as a deadline to race toward.
Day 1: reach the hotel and make tomorrow easy
Choose the airport transfer using the hotel’s actual entrance, not just its neighborhood name. For the sample base, compare bus 6015, AREX and taxis to Myeongdong; the general airport guide covers the broader choice.
After check-in, save tomorrow’s entrance and one meal option near the hotel. Set up a map route and a usable payment method for public transport with the travel apps and transport card guides. For example, if you are settled by 18:00, make 19:00 dinner your only plan. That is a hotel-ready assumption, not a prediction from your flight’s landing time.
An early landing may give you extra time, but confirm bag storage before sightseeing. A late landing changes the whole first evening: follow the late-arrival plan and confirm how you will enter the accommodation after reception closes.
Day 2: Gyeongbokgung, lunch and Insa-dong
Save Gyeongbokgung Palace / 경복궁, 161 Sajik-ro. The operator lists Gyeongbokgung Station, Line 3, Exit 5, or Gwanghwamun Station, Line 5, Exit 2, as approaches. Choose the easier route from your hotel; our subway guide explains gates, directions and exits. Official palace directions
Use the morning for the main halls and pavilion views in the first-visit palace guide. The 09:30 start leaves most of the visit before lunch. Select a restaurant in the palace area, then route to Insa-dong-gil / 인사동길 for the afternoon. Browse crafts or galleries and choose a tea stop; do not add a second palace merely because the map looks compact. Jongno’s Insa-dong guide describes the street between the Anguk area and Jongno 2-ga.
If the Secret Garden is your priority: replace Gyeongbokgung with Changdeokgung and Huwon. Arrange the garden’s timed admission first and move lunch/Insa-dong around it. The official reservation instructions require separate general palace admission and allow 15 minutes from the main gate to the garden entrance. Add ticketing and queue time to that allowance.
If you prefer a Bukchon walk, use it instead of the Insa-dong afternoon and check the residential-area hours and Sunday guidance before choosing a date. It is not an unrestricted evening photo stop.
Day 3: a focused museum visit, then Myeongdong
Save National Museum of Korea / 국립중앙박물관, 137 Seobinggo-ro. Use Ichon Station, served by Line 4 and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line; follow the museum connection signs or the operator’s Exit 2 approach. Choose two or three open galleries rather than trying to finish the collection. Official museum directions
Permanent galleries are free; a paid exhibition, Children’s Museum session or VR booking is a separate decision. Our museum admission guide helps choose. The main galleries open at 09:30, with ordinary closing at 17:30 and later closing at 21:00 on Wednesday and Saturday; entry stops 30 minutes before closing. Official hours and admission
October 2026 room check: the Central Asian Gallery (307) is closed 12–22 October, with reopening planned for the 23rd. Several Buddhist art, metalcraft, lacquer and calligraphy rooms remain closed through 28 January 2027. Pick open rooms from the current floor plan before travelling; a paid exhibition does not restore access to a closed gallery. Central Asian notice, refurbishment notice
After lunch, return to Ichon and use Line 4 to Myeongdong. Both stops are on the same line; allow for the walk out of the museum and the station, not just the train ride. Save two shops you actually want and verify their own hours. Visit Seoul lists Myeongdong Station, Exits 5–10, and notes that store hours vary. This afternoon is useful for shopping while you still have time to sort purchases before departure.
For dinner, choose a sit-down meal or a few snacks according to appetite and dietary needs. Check portions and prices before ordering with our restaurant guide. If Gwangjang Market is a must, replace the Myeongdong block with the market visit and re-route from the museum; do not squeeze both districts into the same shopping afternoon.
Day 4: Yeonnam-dong and Hongdae, with room to linger
Start at Hongik University Station, Exit 3, for the Yeonnam-dong section of Gyeongui Line Forest Park / 경의선숲길. Choose a short out-and-back stroll rather than following the entire linear park. The city’s park guide identifies this approach and the surrounding cafes and shops.
After lunch, move toward the Hongdae shopping streets on the university side of the station. Save a couple of specific stores and a cafe from the official Hongdae area directory; check the businesses themselves for that day’s hours. This gives the day a destination without making every minute depend on a booking.
If you want live music or a performance, check the named venue’s date, ticket, age and identification rules using our events booking guide. Do not assume street performances will occur, or that a late show leaves time for the last train. Save the return journey and a taxi backup.
Day 5: calculate the hotel-leaving time first
Write down the correct airport terminal and the terminal-arrival time recommended by your airline for your flight. Work backward:
Hotel-leaving time = terminal-arrival target − your door-to-terminal route estimate − a disruption buffer.
For an arithmetic example only, a 13:00 terminal target, a 75-minute door-to-terminal estimate and a 30-minute buffer give an 11:15 hotel departure. Those numbers are placeholders, not an airline rule or a verified airport-transfer duration. Replace them with your route, flight and luggage needs. Add time for collecting stored bags before leaving, and for any tax-refund procedure before bag handover at the airport.
With that example, breakfast near the hotel fits; another palace or cross-city shopping trip does not. For an early flight, omit sightseeing entirely. For an evening flight, confirm bag storage and its collection deadline before adding a short activity near your base.
Put the plan on real dates: October 12–16, 2026
Here is a filled example for a Monday arrival and Friday departure. It moves the Hongdae block to Tuesday so the palace visit falls on Wednesday.
| Date | Chosen plan | Why it goes here |
|---|---|---|
| Mon 12 Oct | Arrival, Myeongdong hotel, nearby dinner | No time-sensitive booking after the flight |
| Tue 13 Oct | Yeonnam-dong → Hongdae | Gyeongbokgung is closed on its regular Tuesday |
| Wed 14 Oct | Gyeongbokgung → lunch → Insa-dong | Palace morning on a regular open day |
| Thu 15 Oct | Museum → lunch → Myeongdong | Choose open rooms; Central Asian Gallery is closed |
| Fri 16 Oct | Breakfast, bags and airport | Flight deadline determines the usable morning |
The palace operator’s current rules list Tuesday closure for Gyeongbokgung and Monday closure for Changdeokgung. When a regular closure coincides with a public or substitute holiday, it moves to the next non-holiday. Check dated notices, not just weekdays. Gyeongbokgung’s October–November notice gives last admission at 17:00 in October and 16:00 in November.
The National Museum is not closed every Monday, but it has holiday and selected quarterly Monday closures. Use the closing-day guide to attach your own dates. This worked example is a planning scenario checked on October 11, not a guarantee against a later temporary closure.
Reserve the exceptions, then keep the rest flexible
| Choice | What must be settled before fixing the day |
|---|---|
| Ordinary Gyeongbokgung daytime visit | Open date and daytime admission; a night event uses separate arrangements |
| Changdeokgung Secret Garden substitution | Timed garden entry plus general palace admission; online booking opens at 10:00 KST six days before the visit |
| National Museum permanent galleries | Open day and open rooms; permanent-gallery admission is free |
| Children’s Museum or VR | A confirmed online session; these are separate from the permanent galleries |
| Performance, special exhibition or class | Exact product, date, entry conditions and cancellation terms |
| Shopping and meals | Individual opening/break times and any reservation needed for your chosen business |
The garden booking page and museum reservations page define those separate arrangements. A saved selection or unpaid basket is not a completed booking. Keep the usable ticket and confirmation accessible on your phone.
Adapt it without starting over
- Rain on the palace day: swap the whole palace block with the museum block if both dates work and no reserved session prevents it. If you must stay in Jongno, choose an open indoor venue from rainy-day Seoul, checking its own calendar. A shopping district still involves outdoor walking.
- Low energy or limited walking: keep the morning anchor, a seated lunch and the return trip. Drop Insa-dong after the palace, or shopping after the museum. Check step-free station access and entrance routes for your needs; this is not an accessibility-tested itinerary.
- Five full sightseeing days, with flights outside them: retain the three main blocks and add a second palace day and a Seongsu/Seoul Forest day, if those match your interests. Keep their closing days and weather checks separate.
- Your must-see is elsewhere: replace the Hongdae day with that area. Keeping three coherent full-day blocks is more workable than attaching another district to every afternoon.
Before travelling, save each day’s first entrance, the next stop, the route home, one meal option and the activity you will drop first. Use the trip planning checklist for the entry, payment and booking preparation that sits around this itinerary.
