Gwangjang Market Food Guide: Hours, Portions and Your First Visit

For one small food stop, start with mini gimbap at Mother and Daughter’s Gimbap. For two people wanting cooked pancakes, start with Soonheenae Bindaetteok and ask about sharing before ordering. Save the chosen shop’s Korean name and address, rather than only the market pin. Make a second stop optional: two queues can use more of your afternoon than two dishes.

These are planning choices based on official tourism listings checked October 14, 2026, not taste rankings or a report of a meal we bought. The sources verify the named shops and foods below but do not establish current menu prices or exact serving sizes. We have therefore left out a fixed-price food itinerary.

Choose your first shop before choosing your station exit

Visit Seoul’s 2026 food guide identifies Mother and Daughter’s Gimbap, its mini rolls and mustard-soy dipping sauce. It gives Jongno 5-ga Station, Line 1, Exit 7, with an approximately five-minute walk, for this particular address. That is the publisher’s estimate, not a walk we timed.

KTO’s Soonheenae listing identifies the pancake and meat-patty options and lists takeaway. Its pancake description includes ground pork: “mung-bean” does not mean this is a vegetarian choice. Confirm any ingredient requirement with the shop before ordering.

For general market access, Seoul’s visitor page gives Jongno 5-ga Exit 8 and the market address 88 Changgyeonggung-ro. This does not contradict the shop-specific Exit 7 approach. Use the pin for the place you chose, check the final walking stage, and match both its Korean sign and street address. An exit number alone does not establish step-free access.

Shop hours matter more than the market’s closing time

The KTO market listing distinguishes general shops, 09:00–18:00 and closed Sundays, from the food street, 09:00–23:00 and open year-round. Those are area-level hours, not a promise that every food seller serves until 23:00.

If you reach the market at 20:40, do not plan on Soonheenae: its listed ordering cutoff has passed. The gimbap shop may also have sold out. Choose another visibly operating seller with a posted menu, or move the market visit to another day. The food street’s 23:00 listing cannot rescue a closed kitchen.

Two ways to make the stop fit your day

One person: a gimbap stop between bigger meals

Use the named 모녀김밥 pin from the table. At the shop, choose one order after seeing its roll count and price; ask for takeaway if you do not want to depend on a seat. Keep the dip separate if that is your preference. This is a snack plan, not a promise that one order replaces lunch.

Allow 30–45 minutes from reaching the market area for finding the shop, ordering and eating. That is our planning allowance, not a measured queue. If the queue would consume the time before your next booking, skip the optional stop instead of buying in a rush. Do not occupy another seller’s seats with takeaway food.

Two people: a pancake stop, with gimbap only if wanted

Start with 순희네빈대떡, because cooking, seating and a shared order need deciding before an optional takeaway. Confirm that sharing is acceptable and ask what one pancake order contains. Begin with that order; add meat patties only if you both want them. Two dishes are not automatically a set or a discount.

Allow 60–90 minutes for this market visit as a planning block. If you still want a second stop, use the saved gimbap address and a current walking route between the two shops. Skip that stop when the first queue runs long or you are already full. These are two separate businesses: payment and seating arrangements do not carry over.

For a fixed appointment afterward, choose a leave-by time before sitting down. If your current map gives 30 minutes to the next entrance and you choose a 15-minute arrival margin, a 14:00 booking means leaving by 13:15. The arithmetic is an example; replace the journey input with your actual route. We have not measured an inter-shop walk or guaranteed the serving size of either order.

Confirm the real bill without guessing a “normal” price

The official sources above do not provide a current priced menu with quantities. Older online prices and another shop’s similarly named dish are not enough to quote your bill. Before deciding, read item + quantity + unit price, then add drinks or extras separately. Compare a set’s contents with the individual items you actually want; do not assume the set saves money.

In December 2023, Seoul announced a market price-and-quantity initiative. That is historical context for checking both amount and price, not proof that every stall complies today.

KTO lists card acceptance for the market and Soonheenae; that does not test every stall or an overseas-issued card. Establish the payment method before ordering and retain a cash fallback. If a bill or portion differs from what you agreed, show the original menu and ask about the difference. Keep the receipt and shop name where available; the market listing provides 1330 for travel assistance.

Save the next step, too

Combine this stop with the central-Seoul part of your five-day itinerary, replacing a flexible snack or meal stop rather than adding food after a full lunch. Save a named meeting point if your group separates, and check your onward route before leaving the market.
