Gwangjang Market Food Guide: Hours, Portions and Your First Visit

Plan a food stop, then check the right hours

Gwangjang Market’s food street and its general shops have different schedules. If you want something to eat on Sunday or in the evening, a general “market closed” listing can be misleading. Equally, food-street hours do not promise that a particular fabric shop or food stall will be open.

The Korea Tourism Organization listing, checked September 7, 2026, gives this distinction:

Treat these as area-level visitor information. Check the individual seller if one specific meal or purchase is the reason for your journey. Arriving close to the listed closing time leaves little room to choose another stall.

Save the market name and entrance area

Save 광장시장 / Gwangjang Market, at 88 Changgyeonggung-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul. KTO locates the food street around the East Gate, North Gate 2 and South Gate 1. A route to the market as a whole may end at a different part from the food stall you intended to visit.

Seoul’s official visitor information gives Jongno 5-ga Station, Line 1, Exit 8 as an approach. Check the walking route to your chosen entrance in your map app, especially if stairs or walking distance affect your plans. An exit number alone is not an accessible-route guarantee.

Before you leave the station, save the onward route too. This makes it easier to finish your meal and continue your day without searching for your next destination in a busy aisle.

Start with a dish you can identify

Seoul’s market introduction names bindaetteok, mung-bean pancakes, and mayak gimbap, small gimbap rolls, among its well-known foods. Use those names as starting points for reading menus, not as a ranking of individual vendors.

Choose your first dish before building a larger order. Look at the displayed portion and clarify whether the price is for one piece, one plate or a set. A photograph can help identify the dish, but the actual serving and its ingredients still need checking.

Food names alone do not establish dietary suitability. If an ingredient matters to you, show the seller a specific question and confirm the answer before ordering. A translation app can help start that conversation; an unclear answer is not confirmation.

Confirm quantity and total before ordering

In December 2023, Seoul announced a market initiative to display quantities or weights alongside prices. That announcement describes a planned improvement, not a check of every stall today. It is a useful reason to compare both the amount served and the amount charged.

Use this short sequence at the stall:

1. Point to the exact item and ask what the displayed price includes.
2. Specify how many servings you want.
3. Confirm any drink, topping or extra item separately.
4. Establish the total and payment method before the order is prepared.

These questions are written for those situations:

KTO marks card payment as available at the market. That is not a test of every stall or overseas-issued card. Confirm your payment method with the seller; a small backup amount of cash is a practical contingency, not evidence that the whole market is cash-only.

Fit the visit into your day

For a first visit, our suggested plan is simple: arrive, look around before choosing, order a manageable first dish, and decide whether you want another stop afterward. This is an editorial plan, not a timed route tested on site.

If your group is splitting up, agree on a named entrance or saved map point to meet again. Keep the seller’s receipt when available, particularly if you need to query the bill.
