Korea Taxi Apps and Seoul Fares: Uber, Kakao T and k.ride

If you already use Uber, start by checking it in Korea. Keep k.ride as another option, and compare the selected vehicle and total charge before requesting. Kakao T is useful too, especially if you already have a working account.

The app comparison applies to travel in Korea; the fare table below is specifically for Seoul’s standard sedan taxis. This guide uses official information checked on September 9, 2026. We have not completed app sign-up, an SMS verification, a ride, or an overseas-card payment test.

Which app should you prepare?

Korea Tourism Organization confirms that an existing Uber app and payment information can be used to request Uber Taxi in Korea. This does not guarantee that every issuer, account or location will work for every trip.

Kakao Mobility lists Google, Apple and email sign-up routes for k.ride, plus overseas-issued cards and supported mobile wallets. Its terms allow account-verification checks. Complete setup before you need a ride; social sign-in does not mean verification can never be requested.

For Kakao T, KTO’s app guide describes a Kakao account and direct-payment or automatic-payment options. Its German-language guidance explicitly allows account creation with a foreign phone number. However, we could not verify today’s acceptance of every country code, SMS route or foreign card. If setup stalls, switch to the prepared alternative instead of relying on an untested workaround.

Know who will collect the payment

Automatic payment charges the method selected in the app. Pay to the driver means settling the fare in the vehicle. Check the actual request screen; do not assume that a direct-payment option exists for every app or vehicle type.

Seoul’s taxi guide warns against paying twice after app payment. If a driver asks for another payment, show the trip’s payment status and clarify whether a charge failed before paying again. Keep any second receipt for support.

For a taxi hailed at a stand, confirm payment before boarding and carry a physical card plus some Korean won as a backup. KTO lists cash, credit cards and transportation cards as taxi payment methods and says tips are not required. Acceptance of a payment category is not a guarantee for your particular card.

Seoul standard taxi fare reference

These are the published meter rates checked on September 9, rather than a quotation for a particular journey. Seoul’s official fare table

The nighttime base fares above already include the night surcharge; do not add it again.

The daytime distance increment is KRW 100 per 131 metres; the time increment is KRW 100 per 30 seconds. Distance and time can both contribute below 15.72 km/h, so traffic affects the bill. The city lists a 20% outside-city surcharge, with operating-area exceptions, and applicable tolls. Deluxe, large and premium vehicles have different rules.

For budgeting, enter your real pickup and destination in an app shortly before departure. A hotel-to-station trip and an airport transfer are different purchases; the starting meter amount is not an airport fare estimate.

Why two apps can show different totals

Check whether you selected a standard car, a larger vehicle, a premium service or a reservation. Also compare service charges and discounts.

For example, k.ride’s paid-service terms list a 10% service charge for its Standard (Blue Partners) category alongside the meter and applicable affiliate policies; fees may vary. Cancellation conditions are listed separately. The displayed request details matter more than a claim that one app is always cheapest.

Before confirming:

1. Match the destination’s full address, including the hotel branch.
2. Put the pickup pin at an accessible entrance on the correct side of the road.
3. Compare the vehicle, total estimate, extra charges and cancellation terms.
4. Request only when everyone is ready; avoid parallel bookings in two apps.
5. Match the arriving license plate to your booking and save the completed trip receipt.

If the charge looks wrong

First compare the receipt with the booked service, night period, tolls and any destination changes. A higher total needs an explanation; it is not proof of fraud by itself.

Keep the full license plate, date and time, pickup and destination, receipt, and app fare breakdown. Report an app-payment problem through that trip’s support channel.
