For a wet half-day, choose one area: royal history around Gyeongbokgung, the National Museum of Korea at Ichon, or the library and aquarium inside COEX. Keep a meal break and the return journey in the plan. A nearby indoor anchor usually works better than crossing Seoul to collect several unrelated attractions.
The three time blocks below are editorial planning examples, not routes we have walked or measured. They assume you reach the first entrance at the starting time. Add travel from your hotel separately. Queues, meals, room closures and your walking pace can change the order; the listed gaps are allowances, not guaranteed transfer times.
Choose by location, time and booking
| Your situation | Choose | What to settle first |
|---|---|---|
| Already near Gyeongbokgung or Gwanghwamun; interested in royal history | National Palace Museum, with MMCA Seoul optional | Each museum’s own calendar; a walk outside if adding MMCA |
| Near Yongsan or Ichon; want one substantial museum visit | National Museum of Korea | Open galleries; a separate confirmation if you want the Children’s Museum |
| Near Samseong; want several activities within one mall | Starfield Library, lunch and optional SEA LIFE COEX | The aquarium’s selected-date ticket and total party price |
| Less than two usable hours before another booking | One nearby open attraction and a short break | Time to reach the next entrance, including station walks |
For families, a free museum is not the same as an available children’s session. Without a confirmed Children’s Museum booking, choose the main galleries only if they suit your children, or compare the COEX option before travelling.
Before switching a booked outdoor activity, check its change or cancellation terms. Rain does not itself establish a refund. Use this guide to replace a block in the Seoul five-day plan, rather than adding another half-day to it.
Palace area: a 10:00–14:00 history-and-art plan
National Palace Museum of Korea, at 12 Hyoja-ro, gives context to royal life and the buildings at Gyeongbokgung. Entry is free. Its official directions include Gyeongbokgung Station, Line 3, Exit 5. Allow for the approach outside the station; this is not a verified continuous sheltered route.
The museum opens at 09:30. Ordinary closing is 17:30, with last entry 17:00; Saturday and Culture Day have extended hours. It closes on January 1, Lunar New Year’s Day, Chuseok and the last Monday of each month; when that Monday is a public holiday, closure moves to the following day. Its calendar is separate from the palace’s. Museum information
| Example time | What to do |
|---|---|
| 10:00–11:30 | Visit the Palace Museum’s royal-life and court-history displays; choose a few themes rather than every room. |
| 11:30–12:30 | Lunch and a seated break. If adding MMCA, choose a meal stop on your mapped route to it; check the business’s own hours. |
| 12:30–13:00 | Allow time for the outdoor connection and MMCA ticket checks. If the actual route or queue takes longer, shorten the exhibition block. |
| 13:00–14:00 | See one chosen MMCA exhibition, or finish after the museum and lunch if you prefer less walking. |
MMCA Seoul, at 30 Samcheong-ro, is an optional second stop for contemporary art. For a direct visit, its English directions include Anguk Station, Line 3, Exit 1, followed by a street walk. The two museums do not form a covered indoor complex.
MMCA lists 10:00–18:00, extended to 21:00 Wednesday and Saturday, with free entry 18:00–21:00 on those two days. At other times, exhibition prices vary; the KRW 10,000 all-pass applies when three or more paid exhibitions operate. Check the actual exhibition and any booking conditions before choosing it. The Korean visitor page lists December 1, 2026 as an upcoming temporary closure, in addition to holiday closures.
If a door is closed or a ticket is unavailable: choose the other museum only after checking its own opening and exhibition access. If both fail, keep the meal/rest stop and select another open area before travelling. On a Wednesday or Saturday evening, an MMCA visit can replace the daytime block; it does not require fitting the Palace Museum in first. If rain eases, use the palace guide to check whether enough daytime admission time remains. The Secret Garden is outdoors and timed, so it is not an equivalent indoor fallback.
Yongsan and Ichon: a 10:00–14:00 museum plan
Choose the National Museum of Korea for a focused history-and-art visit. Its permanent galleries are free; a paid special exhibition is a separate purchase. Use Ichon Station, Line 4 or the Gyeongui–Jungang Line. The museum’s subway directions give the Exit 2 approach and Museum Nadeulgil, an underground passage open 07:00–23:00. The passage helps with part of the approach; grounds and onward walks are not all indoors.
The main museum opens 09:30–17:30, or 09:30–21:00 on Wednesday and Saturday; entry ends 30 minutes before closing. It closes on January 1, Lunar New Year’s Day and Chuseok. Permanent and special galleries also close on the first Monday of March, June, September and December, subject to announced exceptions; the next such date is December 7, 2026. Official hours and admission
| Example time | What to do |
|---|---|
| 10:00–10:15 | Check the floor plan and open rooms; choose two or three galleries. |
| 10:15–11:45 | Visit the first part of that selection. Keep outdoor gardens for another day if rain continues. |
| 11:45–12:45 | Take a seated lunch/rest break in a designated dining area; allow time to find a seat and return. |
| 12:45–13:45 | Continue in open permanent galleries, or use a separately confirmed exhibition ticket. |
| 13:45–14:00 | Collect belongings, check the route and begin returning toward Ichon. Add station and train time after this block. |
Children’s Museum: choose the session first. Its official booking rules require an online reservation; there is no on-site ticket issue. Booking opens at 00:00, 14 days before the visit. Count the whole party, including guardians and infants, and keep the mobile confirmation. If you have a session, arrange lunch and the flexible gallery visit around it instead of following the sample times above.
A full children’s session does not make the permanent galleries sold out. If no session is available, decide whether an ordinary gallery visit suits your family before setting out; do not promise the interactive children’s experience at the entrance. Our museum admission guide separates children’s, VR and paid-exhibition arrangements.
For October 12–22: the Central Asian Gallery, room 307, is closed, with reopening planned for October 23. Pick another open room; buying a special-exhibition ticket will not unlock a closed gallery. Other refurbishments can affect room choice too, so check the floor plan and the detailed museum guide before fixing your must-see list. Official room notice
If the whole gallery complex is closed, replace this block with another verified open option; the outdoor Pagoda Garden is not a rain substitute. If replacing Namsan, make the decision before travelling up the hill rather than using the museum as an additional cross-city stop.
Samseong and COEX: an 11:00–15:00 mall-based plan
This option keeps the main activities inside COEX Mall. SEA LIFE’s directions identify Samseong Station, Line 2, Exits 5 and 6 via Millennium Square, or Bongeunsa Station, Line 9, Exit 7 via ASEM Plaza. Choose the simpler line from your starting point, then follow mall signs; the aquarium entrance is on B1. Station exit numbers alone are not step-free route instructions.
Starfield Library is free and opens 10:30–22:00. It is a public space within the mall, so treat it as a browse and photo stop without assuming a quiet seat will be available. Library information
SEA LIFE COEX opens 10:00–20:00, last entry 19:00, subject to operating changes. Its official ticket page makes tickets valid for the selected date and distinguishes admission from paid extras such as boat and VR experiences. Select the actual party and product before comparing totals; a calendar’s lowest displayed price is not necessarily the adult price. Opening hours
| Example time | What to do |
|---|---|
| 11:00–11:45 | Find Starfield Library, browse and take a break. |
| 11:45–12:45 | Lunch in the mall; choose the restaurant and check portions before ordering. |
| 12:45–13:00 | Find the aquarium entrance and have the usable ticket ready. Allow more time if the queue needs it. |
| 13:00–14:30 | Aquarium visit, if admission is confirmed and it fits your budget. |
| 14:30–15:00 | Rest, optional short browse, then follow signs back toward your chosen station. |
If the aquarium is unavailable or too expensive, keep the free library and meal, add only the shops you actually want, and shorten the outing. Do not buy an unwanted attraction simply to fill four hours. If arriving late, check aquarium admission before starting dinner: a 19:15 arrival misses its 19:00 cutoff, even while the library remains open. Keep Bongeunsa temple and any outdoor neighborhood walk optional.
Leave with one workable plan
Save the first entrance, chosen meal stop, ticket confirmation if needed, and return station in your map app. For the free-museum or library option, admission can be zero while meals and transport still cost money. For an exhibition or aquarium, add the quoted party total and any extras before paying.
Use the closing-day guide to check your date, and the subway guide for the return connection. If time runs short, remove the optional second attraction. One visit enjoyed at a comfortable pace is a complete half-day.
October 13, 2026 planning update: admission and ordinary hours, MMCA’s stated December closure, Children’s Museum reservation rules, the listed subway approaches, aquarium ticket conditions and the room 307 notice were rechecked against official sources. The Palace Museum’s English page gives conflicting Saturday evening closing times, so confirm that particular time directly before a late visit. These examples are not a field-tested itinerary, an accessibility audit, a live-availability check or a foreign-card payment test.
