At Noryangjin, agree on the seafood purchase and the restaurant charges before paying for either. A quoted fish price is not automatically the price of a seated meal. Visit Seoul describes two payments: the fishmonger for the fish, and the restaurant for side dishes, vegetables or sauces.
Choose this visit when selecting seafood is part of the experience you want. If you mainly want a quick, predictable meal, compare a restaurant’s posted menu before buying a whole fish. For a smaller snack stop, our Gwangjang Market guide is a different kind of outing.
Choose the meal before the fish
| Your priority | A practical starting choice | Confirm before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Share sliced raw fish with your group | Ask about an order sized for your group and a restaurant that will serve it | Fish total, portions, seating and restaurant charges |
| Eat cooked seafood | Ask a restaurant whether it can prepare your chosen seafood before buying it | Method, preparation charge, waiting time and any minimum order |
| Keep a firm spending limit | Compare the complete meal quote with a posted-menu alternative | All diners, all extra dishes and drinks included in your limit |
| Just look around | Browse without buying and leave time for a separate meal | Your return route and the actual sellers still operating |
Do not let a vendor’s suggested quantity become your group’s order until everyone has agreed. A solo traveler need not buy the same quantity as a group. If you cannot establish an acceptable order size and total, continue browsing or eat elsewhere.
Ask for two totals
Start with the seafood seller. Point to the exact fish or shellfish and establish:
- Is the quote per kilogram, per item or per prepared plate?
- What quantity are you buying, and what is the total seafood price?
- What preparation, if any, does that price include?
- Where will you eat, and who will explain the restaurant’s separate charges?
Then confirm the restaurant arrangement before the seafood purchase is final. Ask whether it accepts your selected seafood, what it will do with it, whether seating is available, and what you will pay for your party. Clarify any table-setting charge, preparation charge, soup, rice or drinks rather than assuming these are included.
A useful phrase to show is “생선값과 식당 비용을 따로 알려 주세요.” — “Please tell me the fish price and restaurant charges separately.” Follow it with “모두 합해서 얼마예요?” — “How much is everything together?” Use a translation app to confirm the answer in writing or on a calculator; a number without its unit is not yet a clear quote.
Keep the stall name or number and the agreed order together. If someone directs you to a restaurant, confirm its name, location and charges yourself. A recommendation is not a promise that the restaurant is the least expensive or that the original quote covers its bill.
Compare the full bill, not an auction figure
Use this planning formula:
Seafood total + restaurant total, including agreed preparation and extras = meal total.
For illustration only, if a seller quotes ₩40,000 for your seafood and a restaurant quotes ₩20,000 for your party’s agreed service and dishes, your starting total is ₩60,000 before anything else you add. These are arithmetic examples, not observed Noryangjin prices or a recommended budget.
The KTO listing distinguishes retail prices from auction prices and directs visitors to the market’s price information. An auction figure is not a guaranteed retail offer, prepared-food price or restaurant bill. Compare the same species, quantity and preparation when comparing sellers. Do not treat an undated blog price as today’s quote.
If the combined amount exceeds your limit, reduce the order or choose another meal before buying. Confirm how each business accepts payment and keep the receipts where available. We have not tested overseas-card payment at individual stalls.
Get to the current market entrance
Save 노량진수산물도매시장, 674 Nodeul-ro, Dongjak-gu, Seoul. The market operator’s directions give Noryangjin Station Line 1 Exit 9 and Line 9 Exit 7 as approaches.
The operator’s page contains different descriptions of the final Line 9 connection: one describes an underground walkway and another an overpass. Use current station signs and a current walking route to the market entrance rather than relying on an exact distance from that page. If you need step-free access, check the lift route with station staff; an exit number does not establish accessibility.
Inside, use the current directory to find the restaurant you agreed on. The operator’s facility guide lists seafood sales on 1F and sashimi restaurants on 2F; do not assume every eating place is beside the stall where you bought the fish.
Market hours are not restaurant hours
The operator separates auctions from wholesale/retail sales. Retail sales are listed as open year-round, but different sections have different hours: the operator’s “high-class” section is listed as 24 hours, general fish 01:30–22:00 and shellfish 01:00–22:00. These listings do not establish that your chosen restaurant serves all night.
For an ordinary meal visit, confirm the restaurant’s opening and last-order time first. Do not plan dinner around the phrase “24-hour market.” The operator lists Sunday and specified New Year, Lunar New Year and Chuseok closures for auctions; that is a separate schedule from retail sales. A meal visit does not require attending an auction.
Before leaving your hotel, save a return route as well as the market pin. If you stay late, check the final useful train to your destination and allow for the station walk. If rail no longer works, compare a taxi from a clear pickup point using our taxi guide. Do not assume that an open market means trains are still running.
