KTX Booking: Start with the Official Website

Begin at KORAIL, then build the booking

Start with KORAIL’s official English website. You can also reach reservation services from the railway’s corporate website. Check the address bar before entering passenger or payment information: a result containing “KTX” in its title is not automatically the operator.

KORAIL has published a warning about unauthorized ticket websites and excessive charges. Booking directly gives you a clear reference for the train, fare, and conditions. If you later consider an agency, compare its total charge, ticket-delivery process, and cancellation terms against that reference.

Check when your travel date goes on sale

The official ticketing guide gives the normal opening time as 07:00 Korea time, one month before departure. Website sales normally close 20 minutes before the train departs. Check special notices before treating that timetable as universal, especially for holiday travel or a changed train schedule.

September 2026 booking checks, verified September 8:

Remaining-seat sales are announced for September 11 at 15:00 KST, through the app, website and station counters; non-members must pay immediately when purchasing remaining seats.
October 7–11, 2026	KORAIL announced 10:00 KST, rather than the usual 07:00, for the one-month-ahead sale opening for these departure dates.
Selected trains departing from October 1, 2026	A separate notice changes sale dates for a listed group of trains. KORAIL says it will issue another announcement on September 17 at 14:00 KST; that is not a confirmed ticket-release time. Check whether your train is listed.

Sources: Chuseok English notice, Korean Chuseok notice, October 7–11 opening-time notice, and selected-train sale-date notice. These are dated exceptions, not a new permanent rule. The Korean notice was also checked because the English Chuseok text contains an inconsistent general-reservation date range.

For a visitor arranging a Seoul–Busan trip during Chuseok, the useful next step is to check the remaining-seat release and a workable alternative departure, rather than repeatedly trying a date that is not available through the normal sale process. No seats are guaranteed by the release announcement.

Prepare a small booking sheet

Have these details ready before searching:

• Departure and arrival stations, rather than city names alone.
• Your travel date in Korea and a workable departure-time range.
• Passenger names and any identification details requested by the booking form.
• Passenger categories and whether the group must sit together.
• An email address you can access, plus access to your payment issuer’s authentication process.

Avoid tying a train departure closely to an incoming flight. A ticket search cannot predict your immigration queue, baggage delay, or journey from the airport to the departure station. If the connection is essential, choose a margin you can explain rather than one that merely fits a timetable.

Compare the result before paying

If your preferred departure is unavailable, search a wider time range before changing your whole trip. Also check whether the date is currently open for sale. An empty result does not, by itself, tell you whether all trains are sold out or the booking window has not opened.

Separate a payment attempt from an issued ticket

After submitting payment, look for the booking’s confirmed ticket status and the train details. Record the reservation reference and learn how to reopen the ticket through the official service. KORAIL’s ticketing guide says to retain the email address and password used for the booking, including uppercase and lowercase letters, for the MY TICKET lookup. Keep those privately; do not share screenshots that reveal them.

Follow the ticket’s current presentation instructions; a payment notification alone is not your travel document. KORAIL’s FAQ warns that boarding without a valid ticket can result in an additional fare.

If the page stalls or an authentication window closes, first inspect your reservation history and your issuer’s transaction status. Repeating the purchase immediately can make an uncertain situation harder to resolve. Keep the error wording, approximate attempt time, and any reservation reference for support, without sharing your full card details.

A different supported browser or a stable connection may help a website-loading problem, but neither guarantees that an issuer will authorize payment.

Plan for a change before you need one

The ticketing guide distinguishes three points in the journey:

• Before departure: use MY TICKET for eligible online refunds and read the displayed deduction.
• After departure: the guide directs refund requests to a station ticket counter.
• After the arrival time printed on your ticket: the guide says a refund is not available.

Do not assume every cancellation is free or that the normal deduction applies during a special holiday period. KORAIL’s FAQ also says refunds to overseas cards can take roughly two weeks to one month, depending on the card issuer. A completed cancellation and a refund appearing on your statement are separate events.

For a Seoul-to-Busan trip, save more than “KTX booked.” Keep the station, departure date and time, train number, carriage, seat, and retrieval method together. Recheck your ticket before leaving the hotel, then allow time to find the correct platform.
